Since you elected me in 2021, I helped secure $45M for permanent supportive housing for individuals who are chronically homeless. This housing with on-site case managers and mental health and drug counselors is both a proven, compassionate approach and fiscally responsible. Providing people who have been living on the streets with a stable living situation greatly reduces the burden on our emergency service providers, saving taxpayer dollars and reducing emergency response times for other community needs.
Council will approve our first contracts for permanent supportive housing in April and soon make great strides in getting homeless individuals off the street.
I have also met with several judges to explore creating a specialty homeless court that will take into account the situations of unhoused individuals who are going through our judicial system so that we can more effectively address each unique challenge.
